Job Description

Software Engineer – Development

 Technical 
-Specifies, designs, implements, tests, and maintains platform-independent, co
mplex software system components such as high-end multiprocessing client-serve
r relational database product components. 
-Duties involve working on, or integrating with, emerging Internet technologie
s and components, applications, and transaction servers, as well as RDBMS inte
rnals (such as query processing, access methods internals, transaction managem
ent, database administration internals, process management, and networking), S
QL programming, C/C++/Java programming (including data structures), debugging 
tools, software management utilities and tools, networking in Unix or NT envir
onments, process synchronization, and development and delivery of new features
. 
-Works under general supervision and/or with a team on assigned tasks and/or p
rojects of moderate complexity. Designs and implements algorithms for assigned
 tasks. Develops quality software to general specification. Executes developme
nt assignments to include design of conceptual approach, coding and debugging.
 Assists in designing software systems detailed specifications. Determines the
 time estimates and work plan necessary to achieve the goals for building, tes
ting and maintaining the product.

-Communicates information directly and clearly. Checks for clarity and underst
anding during a conversation using active feedback, reflection, and other comm
unication techniques. Facilitates and moderates issue identification and resol
ution. Identifies, communicates and resolves conflicts with the individuals in
volved. Acts with a perspective of achieving continuous improvements. Encourag
es all members to put forth their views and contribute. 
-Presumes that change is constant and acts in ways that enable change to occur
 positively. Acts congruently with Sybase values. Promotes teamwork and cooper
ation within own department, between other departments, and between business u
nits. Supports the business needs of Sybase through ideas, action planning and
 communication. 

Planning 
-Determines the time estimates and work plan necessary to achieve the goals fo
r building, testing and maintaining the product. Executes the work plan, provi
ding intermediate progress and exception reports to appropriate managers and p
roject leaders. Achieves the committed results within the time frame, function
ality, performance and quality objectives established for the project.

Software Engineer – Quality Assurance 

Technical 
Designs, implements, documents and maintains product components. 
Uses established software engineering concepts, principles and processes to ac
hieve committee results. 
Implements, executes and evaluates unit tests for product components. 
Assists in development and implementation of test related activities for assig
ned product components. 
Performs functional test development from test specifications. 
Performs test execution and maintenance, analysis, and reporting for assigned 
features. 
Reviews user documentation. 
Participates in test installation cycle. 
Works to assigned schedules and communicates issues that impede progress early
 in work cycle. Provides input into work plans for assigned tasks. 

Performs other related duties as assigned.
