Many of PepsiCo's brand names are more than 100-years-old, although the corporation is relatively young. PepsiCo was founded in 1965 through the merger of Pepsi-Cola and Frito-Lay. PepsiCo acquired Tropicana in 1998 and merged with The Quaker Oats Company (including Gatorade) in 2001.

In 1981, PepsiCo became one of the first American companies to enter China when it signed a contract with the Chinese government to set up a bottling plant in Shenzhen. Thus began Pepsi’s investment in the country. PepsiCo has invested over US$1 billion in setting up 21 bottling plants and one concentrate plant in 20 cities all over China. The company directly employs more than 15,000 staff and creates 150,000 indirect job opportunities in China.
